Terms of Reference (ToR)
Birthing Center Scoping Assessment on Maternal and Newborn Care at Birthing Centers in all Provinces Nepal.
Background: The Birthing Center Scoping Assessment aims to assess the quality of maternal and newborn care provided at birthing centers in all seven Provinces of Nepal This study will provide valuable insights to guide future programs and interventions aimed at improving maternal and newborn health outcomes.
Objective:
The primary objective is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of birthing centers to evaluate the quality of services, practices, and outcomes related to maternal and newborn care, identifying gaps and challenges faced by healthcare providers.
Duration: Initially 1 month with possibility of extension as per requirements.
Number of Positions: Several positions are available across the provinces of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim.
1. Qualitative Researcher – Terms of Reference
Objective:
The Qualitative Researcher will be responsible for conducting in-depth interviews and Key-Informant Interviews (KIIs) with healthcare providers, mothers, and community members to gather qualitative insights on maternal and newborn care practices.
Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct in-depth interviews (IDIs), Key Informant Interview (KII) with relevant stakeholders.
- Analyze qualitative data to identify themes, patterns, and key insights.
- Develop comprehensive reports based on findings.
- Provide recommendations for program improvements based on qualitative data.
- Coordinate with enumerators to ensure data consistency.
- Ensure ethical practices and maintain confidentiality.
Qualifications:
- A degree in Public Health, BSc Nursing, BN, Social Sciences, or a related field.
- Experience in qualitative research, specifically in the health sector.
- Excellent interviewing and facilitation skills.
- Knowledge of maternal and newborn care practices in Nepal.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Proficiency in Nepali and/or local languages.
2. Quantitative Researcher – Terms of Reference
Objective:
The Quantitative Researcher will be responsible for analyzing numerical data gathered from surveys, providing statistical analysis and insights for the assessment of maternal and newborn care at birthing centers.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement the quantitative data collection process, including surveys and assessments.
- Ensure the accurate entry, cleaning, and analysis of data.
- Analyze statistical data and generate reports based on findings.
- Present findings to the research team, highlighting key trends and patterns.
- Work closely with the qualitative research team to integrate both data sets.
- Ensure that ethical research guidelines and standards are followed.
Qualifications:
- A degree in Statistics, Public Health, BSc Nursing, BN or related field.
- Experience in quantitative research and statistical analysis.
- Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R).
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Good knowledge of maternal and newborn health issues.
- Fluency in Nepali and/or local languages.
- Experience with KOBO Toolbox for data collection is an advantage.
Reporting & Deliverables:
- Qualitative Researcher: Daily and Weekly progress reports and the final analysis report based on interviews.
- Quantitative Researcher: Data analysis reports and final statistical analysis report.

Note: Candidates with experience in clinical practice, public health, and research, particularly in maternal and newborn care, will be given preference. Additionally, researchers must have prior experience in survey-based research and data collection using KOBO Toolbox.
