Job Description
The Program Associate – Wildlife Trade Monitoring will be responsible for the implementation of wildlife conservation and protection work in Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) and this position will be instrumental in advancing our conservation efforts, particularly in combating wildlife trade and safeguarding endangered species. S/he will also be responsible for making close contact and coordination with the TAL offices as well as Protected Areas (PAs), Division Forest Offices (DFOs), and other enforcement agencies of the government of Nepal together with community-based organizations, especially CBAPUs, local NGOs/CBOs, and partners. This position will contribute to ensuring the successful implementation of the activities in the field giving quality results. The position will be based in Eastern TAL.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Coordination
- Coordinate with the relevant local conservation agencies and partners for effective wildlife conservation and law enforcement support and delivery.
- Coordinate with the TAL Program Office and Crosscutting to support conservation support activities.
2. Planning and Implementation
- Maintain harmonious relationships to plan, initiate, and implement site-based programs and activities on wildlife conservation in close coordination with TAL, PAs/DFOs, and communities.
- Regularly visit field sites such as PAs, Corridors, complexes, and other key sensitive places for conservation-related works.
3. Program Monitoring and Reporting
- Performs on-site inspection to monitor the progress of specific WWF monitoring framework-focusing projects.
- Design and implement capacity-building initiatives within communities to enhance their involvement in wildlife conservation efforts.
- Support to strengthen and mobilize CBAPU and other CBOs.
- Collect data and prepare required reports of the implemented projects and programs.
4. Capacity Building
- Assist in the sensitization of enforcement staff, non-conventional partners, and communities in wildlife conservation, human-wildlife conflict management, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade control at the field level.
- Support and guide to strengthen and mobilize CBAPU and other CBOs.
5. Database, Information Management and Documentation
- Maintain database and document information on wildlife program and Project work.
- Regular visits to field sites such as Protected Areas and other places to collect information on wildlife rescue, human-wildlife conflict, wildlife parties’ arrest & seizure, and legal procedures and decisions related to wildlife.
- Maintain and update database related to community Mobilization (CBAPU) in TAL.
6. Program Design & Concept Development
- Develop and conceptualize new and innovative concepts to support the fund-raising task of the organization.
- Support design and implement innovative projects.
7. Communication
- Provides necessary support to the Communications Unit in developing programs related to communications materials and products.
- Regular communication with the center and the field offices. Collect case studies, success/failure stories, lessons learned, and event/periodic reporting to the center.
- Work with the field team to develop and disseminate Information, Educational, and Communication (IEC) materials on wildlife conservation.
8. Other Duties
- Any other duties in relation to the above assigned by the supervisor.
Working Relationships:
Internal: Closely works with Wildlife Trade Monitoring Unit and TAL Office, Interacts frequently with other program staff and field staff.
External: Interacts frequently with Community-based Organizations, government enforcement agencies, Local Government, and NGOs.
Qualifications
Knowledge: A Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, wildlife conservation, protected area management, Natural resource Management, Environmental science, or related fields with a sound understanding of wildlife conservation, environmental protection, Protected Areas Systems, Species Conservation, and Community mobilization. A Master’s degree in the above fields is preferred.
Experience: Should have a strong knowledge of species issues, especially conservation and protection of species, human-wildlife conflict, wildlife crime, and Community engagement with at least 2 years experience in related fields. The individual must be technically proficient and qualified in the conservation field.
Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision in the field and the office.
- Must be computer literate and use appropriate technology to present to partners and stakeholders.
- Good written and spoken skills in Nepali and English.
- Good interpersonal skills, innovative thinking, versatile ability to work in a team and work independently.
- Good understanding of current issues especially knowledge of environmental and conservation issues.
- Willing to travel as and when required.
